Update on proposed changes to the law on screening in fertility treatment

Last month, we welcomed proposed changes to the law relating to reciprocal IVF and known donation from individuals with undetectable HIV. However, following the announcement of the General Election, this legislation has not progressed through Parliament.

We will update the sector if these changes progress following the General Election. Clinics should continue to follow existing law and our guidance.

Change to the law on posthumous storage of gametes and embryos for patients who died before 1 July 2022

In the May 2024 Special Edition of Clinic Focus we told clinics about upcoming changes to the law affecting storage of gametes and embryos for a small cohort of patients who died before 1 July 2022. These changes came into force on 10 May 2024.

We have updated the Clinic Practical Guide on legal changes to storage limits and guidance to support clinics storing affected material to implement these changes.

If you have any questions, please contact your inspector.

2024 PR event

This year has been busy for us and the fertility sector, including the launch of our new fertility dashboard, huge increase in requests to ‘Opening the Register’ information, including the first donor conceived children who became eligible to find their donor since the removal of donor anonymity in the UK, and proposed changes to the law on screening in fertility treatment.

We have therefore decided to postpone the PR event for this year and will look to hold it again when there are important and significant issues to discuss with PRs.

Guy's and St Thomas' Virtual Prenatal Genetics Short Course

Guy’s and St Thomas’ virtual skills-based course takes place on six half day sessions running between 16 October and 29 November 2024.

This skills-based course is designed to give midwives and other health professionals working with families who are pregnant or considering a pregnancy that have a diagnosis or are at risk of a genetic condition. It will provide you the tools to help you to identify those people at risk, talk with them about their risk and reproductive options and facilitate appropriate onwards referrals.

The course is designed to equip you with the basics of prenatal genetic counselling and managing complex scenarios as well as an update on new technologies. You’ll also gain skills in taking a family history, understanding approaches to genetic testing and taking informed consent.

You can book your place here.

Alternate text

‘Embryo and gamete movement in – (GI) and ‘embryo and gamete movement – out’ (GO) forms must be submitted on the same day that the relevant material is received or transferred (as appropriate) in order to be compliant with General Direction 0005.

Centres are reminded to submit these forms promptly as PRISM does not allow a GI form to be submitted by the receiving centre unless a corresponding GO form has been submitted. Similarly, gametes or embryos cannot be allocated to a patient’s treatment cycle or treatment forms submitted without the prior submission of the GI and GO forms.

The Code of Practice will be updated to reflect this in due course.
